Jerusalem is home to several parks and should you venture out to one you will be competing with the locals who frequent them as much as possible (especially during the summer, but essentially any time the weather is good). The largest park is Gan Sacher, which stretches from the Valley of the Cross to near the Central Bus Station. It is an oasis of greenery and trees and provides a welcome respite from the noisy traffic and at the hottest part of the day the sun.
There are large expanses of grass that one can spread out a rug to read or just to laze. There is almost always some kind of sporting activity going on; from ultimate frisbee, to touch rugby, touch football, basketball (at the courts on the northern end of the park) and even a small skate park. There is even a workout station with free machines (though there are no weights attached to them).
A few minutes walk from Gan Sacher is Independence Park. Located off King George Street and stretching down toward Nahalat Shiva it also provides an attractive and comforting respite from the hustle and the bustle of both the Jerusalem traffic and the sun. Added to this list is the Liberty Bell park whose entrance is a few meters from the Inbal Hotel, as well as the Jerusalem forest, which rings the city as home to nature trails and places of interest
