Jerusalem is a holy city to the three monotheistic religions of the world and as such it is jam-packed with religious sites. They are too numerous to list here but there are obviously some highlights that should be on your itinerary. When one thinks of a picture-postcard image of Jerusalem one thinks of the most prominent religious site, that gold dome. The Dome of the Rock (which is not in fact a mosque) and its less ostentatiously domed neighbor Al-Aqsa are at the heart of Muslim life in Jerusalem.
Islamic tradition denotes that the rock underneath the dome is the foundation stone of creation as well as the departure point for the Prophet Muhammad's ascent to Allah. It is considered the third most holy site in all of Islam and it and its environs is fiercely protected by the powerful Waqf of Jerusalem.
The Christian religious sites in Jerusalem are many and legendary and they reflect the slightly chaotic nature of Christanity in Jerusalem. There are several competing Christian churches that claim to true divinity here; the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, perhaps the pre-eminent Christian religious site is fought over by Eastern Orthodoxy, Oriental Orthodoxy, Roman Catholocism, Anglican and Protestant Christians.
The most famous and oft-visited Jewish holy site is the Kotel, or Western/Wailing wall. It is the nearest place to the original Holy of Holies, which was in the center of the destroyed Temple that Jews can readily gain access to
