Jerusalem is fit to bursting with all manner of markets. Also known by the terms shuk or souk, Jerusalem's markets are a great place to guage the heartbeat of the city as so many locals shop at them. Possibly the most famous market in Jerusalem is Mahane Yehuda near to the downtown city center. A sprawling, confusing cacophony of sounds, smells and sights this is an absolute must on anyone's itinerary.
Mahane Yehuda is broadly broken up into the covered and non-covered sections and links to the two main thoroughfares of Agrippas Street and the Jaffa Road. There is a dizzying aray of fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, fish and spice stores that will have you using a search engine to find out what they all are. It is also a place in recent years that has begun to call itself home to a growing number of exceptionally well-priced and varied restaurants.
On Fridays on Bezalel Street there is a superb arts and crafts market that has become a real hit with locals and tourists alike and is such a pleasurable way to while away an hour or two. In the Old City, particularly in the Arab Quarter there are bazaars and stalls galore selling all manner of goods; from backgammon boards to rugs, fabrics to hookah pipes, jewelry to candies.
