In any citywide bar trend, there always has to be one place that provides the standard, the one place all others will inevitably be judged against. The trend is Jerusalem's Irish bar scene, and the place is O'Connell.
Do you, perhaps, like beer? Do yourself a favor and head down to O'Connell (early if you can, they turn people away once the bar is filled up) and partake of Jerusalem's largest selection of beer on tap – Ireland makes a showing with Guinness and Kilkenny, but indulge your international streak with eight Belgian beers, two Danish beers and one German beer (Holland, Czechoslovakia, Mexico and the USA also make a showing in the bottled portion of this beer Olympics). When you're done with the beer, sample some of the dizzying selection of Irish, Scottish and American whiskeys.
O'Connell tacks on an excellent kosher meat restaurant with dozens of choices to soak up the alcohol, including some of the best fries in Jerusalem. And as befits an Irish pub, it's the place to be on football (soccer) night, surrounded by dozens of cheerful Israelis and foreigners hoping against hope that this will be the year Israel makes it to the World Cup.
