The German Colony may have recently acquired a reputation, somewhat deserved, as an enclave of mostly religious American immigrants and temporary residents. But once you look past the veneer of English speakers, native Israeli cultural life flourishes among the Arab villas of the Colony.
One of the centers of Jerusalem's surprisingly developed film subculture is the Lev Smadar Theater on Lloyd George Street (right off Emek Refaim), and part of the theater is a cafe – which becomes absolutely packed on Shabbat with young, hip, secular Israelis while the rest of the city prays, sits down to dinner with family and sleeps. The cafe, beyond its undeniable cachet, serves a full menu of coffees and teas, along with both meat and dairy sandwiches, pastas, the typical Israeli mountainous salads and plenty of desserts. You can enjoy your food with one of the theater's nightly offerings of often obscure art films, or you can just sit back and soak up the Jerusalem culture that bubbles beneath the city's surface.
