Beit Avi Chai presents LIVING TO THE FULLEST: Commemorating 70 years since the Auschwitz-Birkenau Family Camp
Sunday, Apr 27, 8:00 PM
Thousands of prisoners were sent from Theresienstadt to Auschwitz-Birkenau and placed into a special area called the “Family Camp”. At a short distance of 150 meters from the incinerator chimneys, the prisoners of the camp, led by Freddy Hirsch, attempted to care for the children and continue with the educational spirit that they brought with them from the Theresienstadt Ghetto. The children in the children’s center knew hours of joy, of laughter and togetherness. Six months later 4,000 men, women and children were sent from the camp to the gas chambers, only a few survived and wondered whether there was any point in continuing the educational work when such a cruel fate awaited the next transport as well.
