Beit Avi Chai presents "Dining in Jerusalem": A series of culinary workshops about food in Jerusalem.
BEIT AVI CHAI, in collaboration with Yad Ben-Zvi, presents workshops and tours on the culinary tradition of Jerusalem, from the Second Temple period to the dawn of Zionism, through the foods and cultures that shaped the city.
The Second Temple and Roman Period: Workshop at BEIT AVI CHAI
Jerusalem of the Second Temple Period was a tempestuous city in constant flux.
The dining tables of those days were filled with holy foods alongside local and imported crops, both fresh and preserved.
The workshop will investigate the historical roots of imperial Roman and local Jewish cuisine, examine the relationship between holiness and food, and ask whether anything from those times is still served on our tables today.
Hosts: Chef Yossi Ben Dayan and Edna Assis, a guide at Yad Ben-Zvi
The workshop will take place twice, and will last for two-and-a-half hours:
- Monday, October 22, 7 PM
- Monday, October 29, 7 PM
Admission per session: NIS 60, students: NIS 30
Jerusalem in the Second Temple Period: A Tour
The tour will take us down through the layers of time to Jerusalem of the Second Temple Period, as uncovered by archaeologists and scholars. We will hear about holiday and weekday foods, get to know the dining customs of that time, and, of course, taste it for ourselves.
Guide: Edna Assis
The three-hour tour will be offered twice:
- Friday, October 26, 9:00 AM
- Friday, November 2, 9:00 AM
Admission: NIS 110 (including entrance to the Herodian Quarter)
Combined cost for Workshop and Tour: NIS 150 (including entrance to the Herodian Quarter)
Upcoming (and last) sessions of the workshop:
Zionist food in Jerusalem: The Culinary Culture of early Zionism- * last session
Tuesday, December 25, 7 PM
Zionism brought a wide array of new ideas to the dinner table, with dishes based on local products: melon in mayonnaise, mallow burgers, and other such delicacies were eaten by the pioneers and their creative house wives, who, in the early years of the state, had to cope with government policies that went as far as the content of the dinner plate.
Moderators: Chef Yossi Ben Dayan and Edna Assis
Each workshop runs for two-and-a-half hours
Zionist Jerusalem: A Walking Tour
Friday, December 28, 9 AM
We will set out on a tour of the Sha'arei Hessed and Rechavia neighborhoods and get a taste of Zionists dishes and stories.
This three-hour tour includes a visit to President Ben-Zvi's hut and to the historic BEIT Hehalutzot
Tour guide: Merav Horovitz
Admission: NIS 95; combined cost for workshop and tour: NIS 135
This is a Hebrew-language only event.
