Beit Avi Chai presents "Singing the Words": Classic poems in Hebrew song-a series of encounters with musical accompaniment

Editor, host, and performer: Dr. Ori Leshman

From Bialik to Zach and from Rachel to Hanoch Levine, Hebrew poetry was and remains a rich resource for songs and an important document of the Israeli spirit.

A new look at the great Israeli poems from all periods. New arrangements of selected poems will be performed at each session.

Session 1: When One Star Dares
The 1970s through the 1990s were years when musical settings of Hebrew poetry flourished and when new poets and composers, with new influences and fresh styles, took center stage. This evening features songs and works by artists such as Matti Caspi, Yoni Rechter, Shem-Tov Levy, Shalom Hanoch, Natan Zach, Yehuda Amichai, Ehud Manor, and Ali Mohar.
With: Rona Kenan, Avi Greinik, and Mai Israeli
Wednesday, January 25, 8 PM

Session 2: Window on the Mediterranean: Where East Meets West
This ingathering of the exiles in Israeli music combines biblical and contemporary Hebrew; new poetry with poetry from the Golden Age; and piyyut with Rock 'n Roll. Western music meets Mizrahi music, from Bracha Zfira and Sara Levy-Tanai through Wilensky and Nardi, and up through the present.
With Din Din Aviv, Ofer Kalaf, and Mai Israeli
Wednesday, February 29, 8 PM

Session 3: Perhaps Now There is a Chance
An evening dedicated to poet and author Leah Goldberg, whose works are full of life and continue to touch young and old alike. The program examines the special bond to her poetry felt by leading Israeli musicians of every period, including Sasha Argov, David Zehavi, Naomi Shemer, Matti Caspi, Yehudit Ravitz, Yoni Rechter, and Miki Gavrielov.
With: Leora Rivlin, Agi Mishol, and Mai Israeli
Admission per session: NIS 50, students: NIS 20
