The holiday of Purim takes place in the Hebrew month of Adar, which usually falls out sometime in March on the gregorian Calendar.
In the story of Purim, Esther and her uncle Mordechai save the Jewish people from extinction, following a series of shocking twists. Purim is celebrated with more abandon than any other holiday in the Jewish calendar, including the consumption of alcohol and masquerading in costume in the festivities. On a more somber note, Jews are obligated to hear the Book of Esther read on Purim night and on the following day.
