Beit Avi Chai presents "Much More than Schlafstunde": Life where Berlin met Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.

While the sabras were walking barefoot proudly on the sand dunes, they strolled along Ben-Jehuda Strasse and drank Sodawasser; when orange crates served as closets, they furnished their homes in Biedermeier style; and when all the kids went out to play, their Wunderkind were taken to piano lessons. They took part devotedly in all facets of the state-in-the-making, they made a decisive contribution to the establishment and building of the State of Israel, but among themselves, over their 4 o'clock Kaffee und Kuchen, they returned to the only language in which a cultured conversation was possible: German.

Actress Hanna Maron describes her first years in the country and the hardships of integration for her and her parents: How should they dress? What language should they speak? What code of behavior should they follow?

Emanuella Amichai talks about her father, the poet Yehuda Amichai, and tries to figure out what aspects of the German-Jewish character were preserved in the home and poems of Amichai, a.k.a. Ludwig Pfeuffer of Würzburg, Germany.

Rafi Kadishson talks about Israeli musicians from Germany and the conflict between European and Canaanite music, in an effort to determine what is Israeli music.

With musical interludes

Organizer and musical director: Niv Kaufman
