Concert 1: Family Portraits
Fanny Mendelssohn | String Quartet in E flat major
Felix Mendelssohn | String Quartet in F minor, op. 80
In contrast to the way Felix Mendelssohn's music was universally celebrated, the talent of his sister Fanny was suppressed throughout
her life. Even today her works are seldom performed, despite their outstanding merit and despite her huge influence on Mendelssohn's
life and work. This concert will present a performance of Fanny Mendelssohn's rarely-heard String Quartet together with a unique
work by Felix in which he gives expression to his unbearable grief at her untimely death.
Tuesday 2.11.10 | 20:00 | The Jerusalem Music Centre (Hebrew)
Wednesday 3.11.10 | 20:00 | The Jerusalem Music Centre (English)
Concert 2: From Russia With Love
Beethoven | String Quartet in E minor, op. 59/2 "Razumovsky"
Tchaikovsky | String Quartet no. 1 in D major, op. 11
Beethoven's remarkable quartet, commissioned by a Russian patron and incorporating a Russian theme, will be performed together with the first string quartet by Tchaikovsky, most loved of all Russian composers, to illustrate the emergence of Russia as an international musical force.
Sunday 12.12.10 | 20:00 | The Jerusalem Music Centre (English)
Tuesday 14.12.10 | 20:00 | The Jerusalem Music Centre (Hebrew)
Concert 3: Romantic Strife
Guest Artists | Tomer Lev (Pianist and Lecturer), Shuli Waterman (Viola)
Brahms | Piano Quintet in F minor, op. 34
Thuille | Piano Quintet in E flat major, op. 20
The sharp division of the musical world in the nineteenth century into two separate camps, ‘The Progressives' led by Liszt and Wagner and ‘The Conservatives' led by Brahms and Joachim, was a fascinating source of tension which fuelled the creations of composers in both camps. Two great piano quintets perfectly express these tensions: Brahms's famous work versus that of his young contemporary, Ludwig Thuille.
Tuesday 29.3.11| 20:00 | The Jerusalem Music Centre (Hebrew)
Wednesday 30.3.11| 20:00 | The Jerusalem Music Centre (English)
Concert 4: Simply Serenades
Mozart | Serenade in G major, K. 525, "Eine kleine Nachtmusik"
Dohnányi | Serenade for String Trio
Hugo Wolf | Italian Serenade
The amorous connotations of the serenade have made it an everyday word for us. But do we really know what a serenade is? This concert attempts to pinpoint this elusive musical form by means of three serenades as remote from each other as east is from west.
Tuesday 21.6.11| 20:00 | The Jerusalem Music Centre (Hebrew)
Wednesday 22.6.11 | 20:00 | The Jerusalem Music Centre (English)
