Two friends moved to Eretz Israel together from Plonsk, Poland, in 1904, at the onset of the Second Aliyah. One was a public leader, man of action, and politician; the other was an intellectual, writer, and agronomist. A discussion about friendship and rivalry, leadership and missed opportunities.

Bialik's "Hakhnisini" was a leading candidate to be selected as the Jewish national anthem. What was it about Bialik that made him able to express the inner workings of the souls of the Second Aliyah pioneers? An attempt to understand Bialik's importance in Israeli culture then and now.
