Rooftop sculpture in Jerusalem
High above the sidewalks of Jerusalem, on the rooftop of Hanassi Street 14 to be exact, lurks a hidden garden of Israeli art, the sculptures and statues of nonagenarian Tamar Eytan. A sculptress for over 70 years, Eytan's work remains as relevant today as when she first studied under the father of Israeli sculpture, Zeev Ben-Tzvi, at the New Bezalel School in the 1930s.
Eytan's artistic journey began when she was just a child, encouraged by her father, who kept her plied with books and materials. As a young woman, Eytan studied at Bezalel before leaving Israel to continue her studies at the Ecole Des Beaux Arts in Paris. She returned to Israel during World War I and served in the British army, an experience that, according to the critics at least, shaped much of her later work. Eytan herself is less willing to draw connections, apart from the fact that she believes that all art-work is shaped to some extent by the artist's life experiences.
After the War, Eytan resumed her art studies, including a stint at the Universal School of Handicrafts in New York. Upon her return to Israel in the 1950s, Eytan opened a studio in Beersheva, which she later moved to Jerusalem.
Today, her sculptures of politicians, animals and allegoric images populate the roof of her Jerusalem home. Though Eytan has exhibited her work in both solo and group exhibitions since the 1960s – an exhibit at the Jerusalem Theater is currently in the works – she remains open to hosting visitors at her rooftop gallery, where decades worth of sculptures, reflecting decades of Israeli history, are displayed.
Eytan's rooftop studio is open to the public, free of charge, from 9:00 to 13:00 and 16:00 to 20:00 each day.
