Jerusalem's top events for the week of June 25th
It's that time of year again. School's out, frozen slushies (barad) are in, and it seems every confluence of anything artsy involving more than one person is termed a festival. It's just as well because with the sun blasting, everyone is pretty much forced to stay indoors in the cool, cool air conditioning most of the day and only come out at night, vampire style. But there's no need to sweat what to do this week. We've got a roundup of the best festivals this week, and a few events that are just good old fashioned happenings.
The fest is the word, so kick off the week with Hebrew University's Tutti Frutti Festival of student theater, just in time for the school year to end.
Or you can head over for the city's biggest party today at the Jerusalem Pride and Tolerance March this afternoon. Show the city that you're here and clear with a massive pride parade, and then make your way to Hama'abada (The Lab) for a drag party commemorating the stonewall riots.
With Shabbat impending, Friday takes a break from the festival scene, but there are still three unique ways to welcome the Shabbat Queen that we will term the Kabbalat Shabbat Festival. Those same Gay Pride cats will be hosting a Kabbalat Shabbat ceremony at the Jerusalem House that will double as a recoup session for the march's participants.
Get your groove on and head to the Boogie who will be rocking an outdoor music party to bring in the day of rest and Beit Avi Chai will go the comedy route with a sendup of the medicinal properties of this week's Torah portion.
Saturday night is all highbrow at the Bible Lands Museum for their wine, cheese and music series. This time accordionist Agit Drive entertains guests of the collection. Nothing says fancy like polka.
Keep up the high culture Sunday by heading to Anastasia Ben Ya'akov's new exhibition at the Jerusalem Artists House, titled "Formation: Matter from Nothing, Matter from Matter."
The Yellow Submarine's municipally sponsored band mentoring project comes to a close for the year Monday night. Groove to the rock and blues of up-and-comers Nut Crackers, Jab, Omega 3 and Ofnat Ha'midrachov. It's your tax dollars at work.
On Tuesday, Shalom Gad plays a rare show at uber-indie Uganda. Just remember, no man is a sardine.
If by now you are thinking the whole festival premise of this roundup is bunk, have we got a surprise for you? On Wednesday the Mishkenot Sha'ananim rooftop music festival kicks off with four nights of Israel's best acts at the most unlikely of venues. First up Wednesday is David Broza playing a collection of hits from his long and distinguished career.
But wait, there's more. We've got more reasons to get you out into the street than a disputed Iranian election, at our full event listings. Check 'em out, or the ayatollahs win.
