One Meter Square fest to fill courtyards with music and poetry
Israeli law dictates that outdoor festivals in Jerusalem are required to ensure at least one square meter of floor space per person in attendance.
For the second year running, from June 30 to July 2, the K'tovet Poetry Group is set to hold the ironically-titled One Meter Square festival. Seventy poets and musicians are participating in 15 intimate events in Jerusalem alleyways, courtyards, cafes and living rooms in the Nachlaot neighborhood and the Machane Yehuda Market. The venues have been carefully selected to ensure that even large numbers of people can experience their unique intimacy.
This year's festival explores the inpidual, intimate, existential "square meters" of life in Israel. Poets will read from their works and interact with the audience. And it's free to all. New and veteran poets will choose works that resonate with the festival themes of pockets, the inpidual, a patch of ground an invitation to laughter. Poets include Nurit Zarchi, Eli Hirsch, Roni Somech, Agi Mishol, Dori Manor and many more.
Musicians such as former Teapacks frontman Kobi Oz, Yahli Sobol, Eran Tzur, Habrerah Hativit's Shlomo Bar, Shem Tov Levy, Yael Levy and others will also contribute to each performance. The festival boasts interactive video events as well.
The K'tovet group has been active in Jerusalem for seven years, hosting events in houses in the downtown Nachlaot neighborhood. They have held dozens of poetry and music evenings, writing workshops and meetings between local and international poets.
Philosophically, the One Meter Square festival represents an existential compromise in a shrinking world, in a country that can often evoke claustrophobia, in the relatively small center of Jerusalem – the heart of the city – and, above all, in the poems, where less always contains more.
