Sculpture worship at Mamilla
Jerusalem has a lively arts scene, but most "high art" around town is relegated to museums and galleries, though there are some exceptions. That will change this month, though, as Mamilla's shopping paradise gets transformed into an outdoor gallery of sculpture.
Statues and scluptures of all makes and sizes have been lining the Alrov Mamilla Avenue shopping mall since the beginning of the month as a showcase for the best of Israel's plastic artists.
Some 80 sculptures from the hands of 27 artists now inhabit the new high-end shopping area, with an eye toward the history and culture of Jerusalem. The exhibition is curated by Tzipi Vital, herself no stranger to art in Jerusalem. An instructor at several art insitutes around Jerusalem, and Vital previously curated another very public display of art in Mamilla: Israel draws Jerusalem.
Just as no two people are alike, no two of the statues on the pedestrian avenue are the same. Some are mostly straight up likenesses of people, if with slightly chubbier frames than their god-like predecessors. Others, on the other hand, invoke the childlike crudeness of ancient statues found in digs; and yet more pay homage to the modern history, future and culture of Jerusalem. Many depict families, couples or dancers.
"The placing of the sculpture exhibition in Mamilla is especially exciting given the statues made from different mediums and techniques against the background the walls of the Old City," Vital told GoJerusalem.com. "The milgling of the public with the statues brings the plastic arts into the consciousness of the everyday - and not just as something that belongs in a museum."
The exhibit runs through the end of September and is, of course, free to the public.
