Jerusalem's top events for the week of August 22nd
With the first day of school, the High Holidays, and autumn just around
the bend, it's time to max out on summer family fun. While many Israelis
choose to travel abroad, there's plenty going on for those who do
choose stick around Jerusalem - for adults, kids, teens, and everyone in
between.
- The Jerusalem Festival of Sacred Music
unites musicians and artists from Israel and abroad, from different and
varied traditions, who come together in Jerusalem to rejoice in the
concept of sanctity and imbue it with new relevance. This year's
festival, which began on Tuesday,continues until Friday at the Tower of David Museum and other locations.
- Woody Sez,
the joyous, energetic musical about the life of Woodie Guthrie comes to
Israel for the first time with two remaining Jerusalem performances at the Khan Theater tonight and on Saturday night. The musical, which first
debuted five years ago in the United States, has toured the world and
won prizes and accolades.
- Last call for Richard III: In Motion:
Theater in the Rough's rendition of Shakespeare's historical play,
performed on the move, comes to a close with the last show tonight
at 17:30 (in English). Later on, catch the Incubator Theater's performance of "This City": a detective story rap musical by The Victor Jackson Show, at 21:00 in Beit Mazia (in Hebrew).
- Welcome the Sabbath on Friday afternoon at First Station
with a musical prayer sing-along performance under the sky, in a hearty
Israeli ambiance, with live music, singing and dancing until sunset.
The event is arranged by Ginot Haeer Community and directed, in
alternation, by the Nava Tehila group and Hazmana LePiyut group.
- Laugh til you cry at Beit Avi Chai's screening of "The Hebrew Hammer" this Saturday night, in the last installment of this summer's round of "Moonlight Cinema in the Courtyard." Up for a party? End off the weekend at HaTza'atzua,
either dancing on the dance floor with one of HaTza'atzua's resident
DJs or chill music for drinks and snacks on the bar level.
- Teens (age 16+) are invited to end off summer on a high note at the Jerusalem Mall (Malcha)'s MTV Summer Party
next Sunday night. The wild end-of-summer party, in cooperation with
the Municipal Youth Authority, will take place in the parking lot
outside the Savion Gate and will feature DJ SKAZI, huge screens,
dancers, gifts and prizes.
- As the high holiday period approaches, experience the City of David's Slichot Tours
in the Old City at discounted prices. The tours are appropriate for
people of all backgrounds, and can be personally tailored to your
interests. The tours begin at Jaffa Gate, end at the Kotel, and include
musical accompaniment, a guide, and entrance fee and a film at the City
of David.
- It's time for one last ring around the museum circuit's assortment of summer offerings for kids and families. The Museum of Islamic Art boasts a Children's Theater Festival and arts and crafts until the end of the week, and the Bloomfield Science Museum invites kids to explore the villa of the fictional Archibald Shadow, meet monsters and much more.
- Kleine Mentshelekh opens for Rani and Eiland from "The Voice - Israel" at the Israel Museum next Tuesday night followed by a performance by Rimon music school students on Wednesday. The shows are part of the Museum's "Tuesday and Wednesday Evenings in August" series of twilight tours, live outdoor music, and extended opening hours in the galleries.
