Jerusalem's top events for the week of September 1st

School's in, and summer festivals are out. But in Jerusalem, there are still good times to be had, from concerts to chef meal deals to parties and more.

Thursday night, one of Israel's most venerable pop stars, Shlomo Artzi (pictured), plays the Sultan's Pool, proving that Jerusalemites need not trek out to Caesarea for good folk tunes in a classic setting. The event serves as a fitting post-party for Chutzot Hayotzer, which recently closed up shop at the venue.

No Israeli singer has had more mojo lately than Asaf Avidan, who has made a name for himself both in Israel and abroad. On Friday, Avidan plays the Tower of David as part of the Citadel's Notes for Jerusalem concert series. Performing alongside hitmakers including Karni Postel and Avishai Cohen, Avidan is promoting an upcoming solo release, fresh from a summer European concert tour.

On Saturday night, head to Blaze Bar for some drinks and Chicago-style blues courtesy of The Chasers. But the rock don't stop at Blaze, where bands play almost every night, pick-up jams take place on Wednesdays, and open mic nights take place on Mondays.

Many an Israeli has seen Tibetan mandalas in the Far East, but it's not often the beautiful sand-art pieces come to Jerusalem. Starting this Sunday and running through October, the Tishkofet Maagan support center hosts sessions on how to draw mandalas and connect to the inner self. The center supports people dealing with illness and end-of-life issues.

On Monday, celebrate swanky and tasty Adom's 10th birthday with a special prix fixe menu for 120 NIS. Named after the traditional Jewish blessing that birthday celebrants ought to continue living to a ripe old age, Adom's birthday menu has been dubbed "Until 120."

Yemen is in the news quite a bit lately, but the land has always been the focus of much attention. For those not fortunate enough to have visited the magical country, photographer Naftali Hilger exhibits his works from 20 years of visiting Yemen at the Museum of Islamic Art.

On Wednesday, Berry Sakharof visits Beit Avi Chai to offer a new and acoustic take on long-forgotten liturigcal texts, part of the center's Lost series.
