In Jerusalem, Slichot become a vital part of the daily lifestyle of many Orthodox Jews, especially men. Slichot are recited either at midnight or at dawn the next day, so people have a choice whether to wait until midnight to recite the prayers, or to arise before dawn.
In the Nachlaot neighborhood in particular, with its dense Orthodox population, abundance of synagogues, and fervent spirituality, Slichot become interwoven with the fabric of daily life. Many people from outside the neighborhood explore the streets of Nachlaot in the month before Rosh Hashanah, absorbing the profound solemnity and joy of its atmosphere, and from this drawing inspiration.
Since Slichot are considered a preparation for Rosh Hashanah, there is a difference of opinion among Sephardic and Ashkenazi Jews regarding how much preparation is necessary. Sephardic Jews begin reciting Slichot when the month of Elul starts, while Ashkenazi Jews begin only a week before Rosh Hashanah.
An additional element of this preparation is asking forgiveness of friends and family, in case a sin was committed against a person. Tradition holds that forgiveness must be sought and acquired on the part of the wrongdoer for a sin to be pardoned in Heaven.
