Jerusalem sends America some chocolate love
For Americans visiting Jerusalem, nothing quite signifies the trip like a visit to the Western Wall, a stroll up Ben Yehuda street and lugging a suitcase full of gooey chocolate rugelach from Machane Yehuda mainstay Marzipan back to the U.S.A. Well, soon one of Jerusalem's most delicious draws won't be available only to those who make the trip over. Marzipan, which clearly recognizes the heavy Anglo makeup of its fan base, is expanding westward.
The idea is not new. According to owner Itzik Ozarko, the bakery, which also apparently makes other delicious delicacies, has been in talks with Starbucks to bring the rugelach to America's most ubiquitous chain. If it had gone through, it would have been a coup not only for the store and latte loving Hebrews, but also for Israel, as Gentiles would be introduced to the best of what Jerusalem does best. What's better hasbara (Israel advocacy), after all, than addictive food?
Alas, though the Starbucks deal was not meant to be, the store has begun distributing packages of the rugelach to supermarkets, starting in the Chicago area, and moving to New York and - Americans can only hope - more places after that.
Ozarko won't call the deal dead, though
"We're going to negotiate with anybody with anybody that wants stuff with us," he said. "We have the right tools."
This isn't the first time an Israeli treat has made it across the pond, and not just Osem, which caters mainly toward kosher keeping Americans. Aroma, the Israeli Starbucks, has itself begun its quest for world domination, starting with two locations in Manhattan. Ice coffee and rugelach? America may just be the new altenueland.
