A big hug for the city of Jerusalem
The stereotypical hippie offer of "free hugs" is usually a pitch meant for human recipients, but for four summers running now, coexistence-seekers have been joining forces to offer a collective embrace for the city of Jerusalem.
On June 21, hundreds of inpiduals who dream of utopian tomorrows are scheduled to lock hands around the Old City walls in the hopes of spreading love and peace on the ancient and holy city, for Jerusalem's Big Hug.
Organizer Dvora Perlman recently explained to GoJerusalem.com that the hug taking place the day after the summer solstice is hardly a coincidence. "It's called the day of big light," she said. "They are called planetary gateways, and it's something the planet experiences. It's good to hold your focus while the whole planet is experiencing something."
The communal cuddle, drum circles and chants piggy backed on the earth-wide Live H20 water conservation-themed concert (see video, below), and this year, planners are hoping for an even bigger and more global turnout.
The hugging will get started around 15:30 with urban lovers linking up at Jaffa Gate and the market plaza outside Damascus Gate, followed by all manner of music, prayer and marching, culminating with a sing-along and drum circle at Tzahal Square, located between Safra Square and Mamilla.
You needn't be a Kryon-channeling new-ager to enjoy the hug, though. The hug is open to all the city's varied populace, including those living inside its stone walls. If there is a better way to get Jerusalem back in that peaceful easy feeling, we haven't heard it. More info can be found at the Lovers of Jerusalem website, or on their Facebook event page.
