Kids in the kitchen: Cooking with Tami at the Malcha Mall
Having the kids underfoot in the kitchen can be a real strain at meal time. But it doesn't have to be that way. Turn the kids into partners in the kitchen with "Cooking with Tami," a series of cooking workshops for children taking place at Jerusalem's Malcha Mall on Tuesday evenings throughout April and May. Although the workshops - which take place in front of the Hamashbir Lazarchan department store - will continue throughout this period, their focus is on Yom Ha'atzmaut (Independence Day)-style cooking, barbecue season now upon us. Indeed, in addition to the weekly cooking workshops, a special Heinz-sponsored May 10th class (that'a Monday this time) will teach kids how to make their own pigs-in-blankets (or should we say cows-in-blankets?). Although technically the class will take place after the holiday, it is an independence-themed workshop, with children learning all the basics of barbecuing (except, we hope, firing up the grill).
Indeed, getting kids into the kitchen - or out to the grill - is a key element in getting them to eat healthy. Dror Tamir, "Cooking with Tami's" Director of Sales and Marketing, tells GoJerusalem.com, "The idea behind our workshops is that children will eat healthy and correctly if they help prepare the foods, choosing their own portion sizes and taking an active role. These workshops - which we hold in malls throughout the country - give children the opportunity to do real cooking. We do everything from soups to salads to desserts. We teach children how to make real food, not 'kids' food.' Our motto is 'Tasty and healthy is possible.' The best way to get kids to eat healthy is by making them partners in the cooking process; the more independence you give them, the more you let them make a mess and get really involved in it, the greater the benefit."
As the product workshop makes clear, children are not the only ones to benefit from the "Cooking with Tami" workshops. Asked about the frequency of their corporate sponsorships, Tamir explains tp GoJerusalem.com, "We hold over 1,000 workshops a year, with over 100,000 children taking part in our activities." During the workshops, the cooks-to-be are with instructors for over an hour. "They are listening to us and learning about food," he says. "During the cooking workshop, while the children are learning to make hot dogs, they can also learn about the health benefits of ketchup - that is has lycopene, etc." Who knows - with a little luck and participation in the workshops, the kids may end up serving you.
