How Jerusalem gets down: a nightlife primer
Jerusalem is known as "The Holy City," but as a vibrant, contemporary town, there's a lot more than holiness going on around here. Jerusalem's rich history and status as the destination of prayers from adherents of the world's three primary monotheistic faiths hardly keeps its young and beautiful (nor its old and non-beautiful) inhabitants from spilling a fair bit of brew on the Jerusalem stone.
Yes, despite what they'll tell you down the road in Tel "The Bubble" Aviv, Jerusalemites do get out, they do get rowdy, and they do stay out. North American visitors may in fact be surprised by Israelis' fortitude: midnight, when American nightlife hounds are often already elbow-deep in lager, is when Israelis begin massing in the nightlife districts; 2:00, closing time in much of America, is just about when things start to get interesting. Hit the streets at 7:00 on a Friday morning, and you'll see the bleary-eyed survivors of the evening's revelry stumbling home, and into cafes, past the early bird Shabbat shoppers.
Thursday is the main party night, but secular Jerusalemites tend to prefer Friday nights, as it's the one time the city is reliably theirs. Jerusalem's bars are open every night, though, and a dedicated crowd can generally be found any night of the week. And your choices are endless: tightly-packed temples to retro audio hip like Stardust and HaCassetta; local live music talent at Birman, Hataklit and Canaan; Commonwealth cool with chips and a Guinness at Glen Bar or O'Connell; grown-up drinking with the above-25 crowd along and near Shlomtzion Mamalka Street, exemplified by landmark hotspot HaTza'atzua/The Toy (pictured); alternative culture and some of Jerusalem's best underground DJs at Sira or Uganda; garishly colored cocktails with inebriated American teenagers along Rivlin Street; gastro-bars of Azza Street and the Old Train Station compound, like Colony and the aptly-named Restobar; and, of course, dancing the night away at the megaclubs of the Talpiot Industrial Zone (and much more).
As you can see, you'll be in good company....
