A stroll down memory lane at the Yellow Submarine with Dag Maluach
Nostalgic for the songs and food of your childhood? Wish you could go back to a time when things were simpler? This Friday, the Yellow Submarine and the Dag Maluach (literally, "salted fish") collective are inviting Jerusalemites to take a trip down memory lane with a celebration of childhood - "A (Mini) Children's Festival" - at the Yellow Submarine. Don't be fooled by the name, though, as this event is not for kids. It's for adults who act like kids, or who want to act like kids, or who want to relive their youth (albeit with a slightly new cast of friends).
Leading up to the party, the public has been invited to submit potential festival names, ideas for booths, and other input - the creative spirit of childhood incarnate. As Israel Hass of Dag Maluach tells GoJerusalem.com, "We really want people to connect to the nostalgia, to connect to their youth with this event, so we wanted to involve the general public in the planning process. If you're involved in the planning, you feel more connected to the event - you are more involved with it. This is a slightly different type of event from the usual Dag Maluach events, and we want it to be really big."
Indeed, founded over three years ago, Dag Maluach has made a name for itself organizing community events across Jerusalem - most notably its monthly gathering in Independence Park. "We are a youth organization," explains Hass. "We are a community organization, but unlike most of our events, this one does not have an explicit social agenda. We just want to have a fun festival. Not all of our events are promoting social change. We want to awaken the city, to awaken the city's youth. If we see a cultural vacuum, we move in. That's the idea behind our events in Independence Park. There was nothing there, and now there is happening once a month. Here too, we are filling the vacuum in Jerusalem youth culture."
The festival, which will take place on the afternoon of Friday, March 12th, is part of the Yellow Submarine's First Hand/Second Hand series of festive events.
