Jerusalem's top events for the week of December 17th
Good Christian men, and women, rejoice. Christmas is almost here. It is one of those paradoxes of Jerusalem that one of the world's most outwardly Jewish cities is also the place where real hardcore Christians - the ones that place more emphasis on Jesus than Santa and the mall - flock to for the holiday. For the lead up to Christmas GoJerusalem.com has all the events to set your ladies-dancing, lords-a-leaping, maids-a-milking and geese-a-laying. Yeah, you heard us right.
• Tonight marks the triumphant return of prodigal sons Infected Mushroom to Israel, the psy-trance group born and bred here that booked it to L.A. for international stardom. Their only Israeli show will see them lighting the 7th Chanuka candle at Kikar Haleum in the government quarter in Naot. Jerusalem mainstays Matbucha Project will open.
• Sad that it's already (already!) the last night of Chanuka? You won't need the world's smallest violin to send the 2009 edition of the holiday into the history books. Instead the Junior Philharmonic at the Jerusalem Theater will take care of that for you, with a whole section of regular-sized violins.
• And then it's time to put away that menorah and convert to Christmas mode. If it's jingle bells you're after, Jerusalem has two options Saturday, Handel's Messiah in Abu Ghosh and a holiday concert at the Augusta Victoria church on the Mount of Olives.
• Forget eggnog. Warm yourself up Sunday night with some legitimate theater, courtesy of the Jerusalem Theater, which will stage "His whole life ahead of him," based on the novel by Roman Gary.
• Tis the season of giving, but instead of Jerusalem asking you to shill to bell-ringing Santas, or pushka-pushing men that have beards like Santa, this time it's you getting something gratis, as in a free classical music concert from the Jerusalem Theater Monday night.
• The Theater Jerusalem festival Mi Drash Bama isn't free, put it's pretty darn close. Visit the Gerard Bechar Center or the Khan Theater Monday through Wednesday for special stage offerings.
• On Wednesday Gilbert and Sullivan ride into town with "The Pirates of Penzance," one of their most popular operas, at Beit Shmuel. It's not the Nutcracker on Christmas Eve, but it still beats Chinese takeout and a movie.
