The Feast of Assumption
The Feast of the Assumption, celebrated on August 15th by Catholic and Orthodox churches, commemorates the Virgin Mary
In the Roman Catholic church, the Assumption is an infallible dogma as defined by Pope Pius XII in 1950. But the feast itself has roots far deeper than that, extending to traditions and texts as old as the fifth century.
While it is not believed that the Assumption itself occurred on August 15th, it was chosen as a day of commemoration because of its connection to pre-Christian festivals, so as to gain widespread acceptance.
It is disputed in Catholic dogma whether or not Mary died a natural death before being assumed bodily into heaven. But this momentous event is seen by many Christians as a confirmation of Jesus’ promise of assumption to all devout Christians.
In the Orthodox Church, the Feast of Assumption is instead called the Dormition of the Theotokos, and is preceded by a 14-day fast. The Assumption in the Orthodox churches is not necessarily dogma, and it is believed that Mary did indeed die a natural death before her Assumption.
In Jerusalem, two places are dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, where the event first took place: One is Dormition Abbey, where it is believed that Mary fell into the sleep that became the sleep of death. The other is the Tomb of the Virgin Mary, where Mary was laid to rest and assumed into heaven.
