A fungus among us: Infected Mushroom hits the capital for Chanuka
Fast on the heels of the fabulous municipality-sponsored Balkan Beat Box concert that helped solidify Jerusalem's place on the map of happening musical destinations, another Israeli ex-pat group is bringing their unstoppable sound to Israel's capital. This time it's the internationally renowned psy-trance group Infected Mushroom, in the Holy Land for one all-night show as part of their latest world tour promoting their new album, Legend of the Black Shawarma.
The band, which started out as a two-person act featuring Erez Eisen ("I-Zen") and Amit Duvdevani ("Duvdev") in the city of Haifa in northern Israel, has since grown into a full-blown operation, moving to the promised land of Los Angeles and gaining a devoted following of party kids worldwide. Their recent album topped the Billboard charts in the US and as they take it on the road, Jerusalem seemed to be the place to go for their only Israel-based concert of the tour. It's exciting news for Jerusalemites who haven't seen the Mushroom this close in years.
The band's sound, which started out as pure psy-trance, has grown increasingly perse with each album, incorporating aspects of psychedelic rock and heavy metal. The new album, released on Paul Oakenfold's Perfecto label, features collaborations with Perry Farrel of Jane's Addiction (recently released as a single, "Killing Time") and Jonathan Davis of the metal band Korn.
The Thursday Chanuka show - squeezed in between performances in Brazil and Hollywood - will take place at Kikar Haleum (National Square), a huge performance space located between Binyanei Hauma and the Foreign Ministry, which holds up to 7,000 people at once.
The party is set to last all night - doors don't even open until ten - with the Israel-based Matbucha Project (chosen for its affinity with Schawarma) opening and DJ Asterix coming on after the band for those who just can't bear to call it a night.
