Balkan Beat Box and friends add color to Black Party
The Jerusalem Municipality tapped into an Amsterdam tradition for its first Black Party this past Wednesday night - a festive event that welcomes the encroaching winter - but it gave it an unmistakably Israeli twist by inviting local boys turned hipster superstars Balkan Beat Box, and by wedding the sold-out affair with an auto safety theme in honor of International Road Safety Day.
A crowd of thousands of Jerusalem youngsters dressed, as required, all in black, made their way to a raved-up, LCD monitor-enhanced Safra Square parking lot, undeterred from their revelries by the mangled husks of crashed cars the Municipality had scattered about to spread a anti-drunk driving message. To that end, the party also featured a non-alcoholic bar for designated drivers - although for most attendees, copious Goldstar was the order of the night.
Reggae outfit Reggaestan and klezmer-dub-hip-hop trio Balkan Beat Box revved up the crowd while Mayor Nir Barkat, noted for his support of youth-oriented endeavors, cruised about the crowd in a Black Party T-shirt, shaking hands and generally reminding all present that this was no longer Lupolianski's Jerusalem.
After being thoroughly Balkanized, the energetic crowd danced into the wee hours of the morning as DJ Syrex manned the decks with a nonstop set of trance.
