Making peace through music at the Tower of David
Yair Dalal doesn't like the word coexistence when referring to peace efforts between Jews and Arabs in the Holy Land. Instead, the world famous oud player likes the word existence, which he says is more natural, much like his upcoming show in Jerusalem on that very theme.
"It's the music that lives here naturally and has been living here for 5,000 years so this is the source of my music. So naturally it symbolizes existence of the cultures here in the middle east especially in Israel in Jerusalem," Dalal said.
Dalal will be one half of the musical dialogue taking place at the Tower of David Museum on Friday October 30. Joining him onstage will be Osama Abu Ali, a similarly world renowned flutist. The two, who live near each other in Galilee, often play together, usually in Europe as part of the Jerusalem Project, which aims, much like this show, to increase understanding between cultures. But now they are bringing their musical talents home to a venue Dalal says is unlike any other.
"The Tower of David is a symbol of Jerusalem. It's not only a place but a symbol, and it's playing a symbol that has existed for many years and still is today."
Of Iraqi descent, Dalal is able to make beautiful poetic music through use of the oud, one of the most ancient instrument, and the violin, a talent that has earned him worldwide fame. The stringed oud has been enjoying a moment of sorts, especially in Jerusalem, which is home to the International Oud Festival, which also brings together Jewish, Muslim and other performers from all over the globe.
The daytime concert is planned to be followed by a tour of at the Tower of David Museum entitled "Four Wings to Heaven and Three Religions," which will take visitors to the top of David's towers for a unique view of Jerusalem. Concert-goers will also be allowed access to the museum's exhibitions.
