Jerusalem's top events for the week of October 1st
With both the High Holy Days and Ramadan behind us, it's time to P-A-R-T-Y. Whether you're spending the next week in a hut, safely indoors or carousing around the streets of the holy city "Ushpizin" style, there is plenty to keep you busy. In fact, the coming of Sukkot, traditionally a boom time for Jerusalem happenings, means there will be even more going on this week.
It's not Sukkot yet, but that doesn't matter to former Shotei Hanevuah frontman Avraham Tal. See why the honey-voiced, accountant look-alike singer has made it on his own when he visits the Yellow Submarine tonight.
You might think you would have to muster your strength after a night of partying and start getting up a little earlier on Friday, with the clock change and subsequent earlier Shabbat time. But if you're planning on visiting the Bloomfield Science Museum, you'd be wrong. The museum doesn't open until 10, meaning you can get a little extra shuteye before packing in six intense hours of hands on learning with a Sukkot twist.
Beit Avi Chai has a huge lineup of Sukkot going ons, and it kicks off Saturday night with the recently reuntited rock unit Eifo Hayaled (Where's the kid?) as part of thier Saturday night concert series. If the kid knows what he's doing, he'll be at Chet7.
Sunday is all about the booths, and what better place to celebrate the holiday of them than by visiting the Bible Lands Museum, which has a whole slew of things to do for the whole family.
Many locals like to use the intermediate days of the holiday to explore their less bustling outlying areas. You can make like the four species and boogie (not too far) out of town to Ein Hemed for a soul music festival on Monday.
Tuesday will see the annual Jerusalem March, which features both the city's best out-of-town friends and some very enthusiatisc locals. Even if you don't decide to walk around town or "tabernacle" with them, make sure to get yourself a good spot to watch the throngs go by. If these pictures of years past don't convince you of the awesomeness sure to ensue, we don't know what will.
If you don't get enough of Haredim and Christian evangelicals mingling on Tuesday, Wednesday will see international Hassid superstar Matisyahu, who once collaborated with POD, at Sultan's Pool for some sukkot psuedo reggae, or whatever he calls his style now.
Think you've seen it all? We beg to differ, and will let you in on our full event listings just to prove it.
