Jerusalem goes art-wild for the start of gallery season
The Hebrew word "Manofim" is normally translated as cranes (the construction kind, not the bird) and the Jerusalem art show of the same name certainly offers visitors a top-down view of the city's culture scene. Now in its second year, the festival showcases most of the galleries that dot the city with exhibits, showings and performances, musical and otherwise.
The Manofim festival started last week, but will go until Sept. 17th, meaning you still have plenty of time to catch a good chunk of what organizers are offering visitors.
Some of the participating galleries include Jerusalem Print Workshop, Social gallery - Musrara, Morel Drefler Gallery - Musrara, The Artists House, Barbur, Agrippas 12, Jerusalem Art Center, Ticho House, Uganda, Anatea, Dana gallery, Hadassah Art gallery, Vision Gallery, Nora Gallery and Artspace.
Many places outside the city center will also be participating, like Mamuta in Ein Kerem and the Arists Studio in Mevasseret Zion, among others.
On top of that, much like the event last year, Manofim curators have turned other Jerusalem landmarks into art houses. These include the Hanson Hospital ( which the city hopes will become an arts center in its own right soon), the Davidov Garage, The Yellow Submarine and the The Jerusalem Bird Observatory, to name a few.
For those whose idea of a good time is watching "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous," or the middle class and locally-known, Manofim has created an event that lets aficionados (and lay art people) take a peak into the secret life of artists. Over 40 artists will open their doors for a cultural open house, which taken together with the similar Batim M'b'finim (Houses from Within) event, which lets people inside some of Jerusalem's more upper crust dwellings to check out the architecture, means there will be a whole lot of house calls going on around town.
Organizers said last year's Manofim extravaganza was a huge success, an apropos beginning to the city's art season, and they are expected no less this year. So if you don't want to disappoint them, get yourself in an artsy mood and come check out some of the best culture the city has to offer. Check out the all the info at their website here (in Hebrew).
