The Jerusalem Light Festival aims to brighten the city
Jerusalem already has a Festival of Lights, the annual eight-day celebration of Hannukah. But starting June 10th, 2009, a different kind of light fest will set the Old City aglow as hundreds of local and internationally-acclaimed light artists descend on the Holy City for the Jerusalem Light Festival. While the pale yellow-orange light normally cast around the Old City may suffice most of the year for lighting the city's various winding pathways and holy sites, these artists will literally turn Jerusalem into a beacon on the hill, a unique event not to be missed. Various sites around and near the Old City will be given a "light" makeover by by over 40 artists who will set up displays that, if the promo pictures (above) are any indication, would make an 80's sci-fi movie character feel right at home.
The festival will last until June 16th and is a first for Israel, though the event also has also been popularly staged in Glasgow and Lisbon in the past. Adding to the planetarium laser-light show vibe around town will be a smattering of musical acts, though they probably won't be pumping out the monsters of classic rock or Dark Side of the Moon.
Organizers have set up several paths for visitors of the Light Festival to follow, like from Safra Square to the City of David or from Jaffa Gate to the Jewish Quarter. The Cardo will also have special light displays. In addition to taking in the breathtaking light displays, some sites will be open free, or discounted, for visitors, like the Tower of David, the Burnt House and more.
In a bid to cut down on pope-visit like gridlock around the narrow streets of the Old City during the festival, a free bus will run a loop around the Old City, from Ammunition Hill to Jaffa Gate, and visitors are encouraged to leave their cars in one of the conveniently-located public parking lots downtown.
