Jerusalem's top events for the week of July 23rd
The Jewish proclivity for symbolic mourning rears its head again this week, with a sizable clamp on music, meat and many things to do with joy. The nine days of mourning commemorate the build up to the ninth of the Jewish month of Av, A 24-hour period with enough bad things attributed to it to provide more than enough fodder for a season's worth of VH1's worst day ever (should they want to develop such a show, wink wink). Among the horrible things ascribed to the day are the destruction of both temples, the fall of the Bar-Kochba revolt, the expulsion of Jews from England, and the beginnings of the Spanish Inquisition, to name a few. Despite the solemnity of the days, there are still a number of things going on around town, enough to take your mind off the depressing straits of this week - and even some events that completely ignore them.
There are, of course more events here. Don't say we didn't tell you about them.
